Twitter Now Includes Recommended Tweets In Everyone’s Feeds

December 1, 2022

Twitter is expanding its recommended tweets feature to all users, including those who have not seen them in the past. This change means that algorithmically selected tweets from accounts you don't follow will be surface alongside other content in the main feed, in order to help users discover other accounts they may be interested in following. While Twitter's announcement emphasizes that this update only applies to those who weren't already seeing recommended tweets, actual users are reporting an uptick in the number of recommended tweets they are seeing. Some are even getting recommendations in their notification tab. You can read more about how recommendations work in Twitter's blog post from September.

Twitter is introducing recommended tweets into users' feeds, based on user behavior. This has caused some users to complain, as they would prefer to see tweets from who they follow, rather than recommended tweets. However, Twitter offers the option to switch to a chronological feed and avoid recommended tweets entirely.

Twitter is expanding the recommendations feature in its app, giving users more control over the types of content they see. This comes after criticism from Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who has said he prefers the chronological feed.

Customizing recommendations can be done by tapping the three-dot icon next to individual tweets. From there, users can say they’re “not interested in this tweet,” or mute the account so Twitter doesn’t recommend it to them again.

Admittedly, it’s a cumbersome way to improve Twitter’s recommendation system, but it’s the only alternative to switching to ‘Latest Tweets.’
