Enhancing Quality Rater Guidelines: Expanding E-A-T to Include Experience

December 15, 2022

The concept of E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) has been used by many creators to evaluate if their search ranking systems are providing helpful and relevant information. To further assess search results, E-A-T is now gaining an E: Experience. This means that content should demonstrate that it was produced with experience on the topic at hand. For example, when looking for information on how to correctly fill out tax returns, content produced by an expert in the field of accounting would be more valuable than a forum discussion from people who have experience with different services. The concept of E-A-T adding an extra "E" for Experience is discussed in depth in this article. Google has recently released updated search rater guidelines, which includes a section dedicated to “E-E-A-T” or “Double-E-A-T.” The guidelines provide clearer guidance on the importance of content that is original and helpful to people, which can come in a variety of different formats and from various sources. These updates better reflect the nuances of how people search for information and the varying qualities of information out there. The guidelines are used by search raters to evaluate the performance of Google's ranking systems, but do not directly influence ranking. Creators can use this as self assessment to be successful in Google Search; there is a section on how to create helpful, people-first content with more explanation about this available here.
